About 19 billion instant messages were sent through chat apps like WhatsApp in 2012. In comparison, mobile users sent only 17.6 billion SMS texts the same year. The shift towards instant messaging service is likely to have a considerable effect on mobile operators. SMS text messages have always been very lucrative for them, but now they may be losing this source of income as SMS revenues are sliding down. According to research firm Ovum, mobile operators lost over $23 billion of SMS revenue in 2012 because of popularity of chat apps.
